So we've already thrown in the towel?

Okay, so I just read this NYT feature, which clearly says that there are no tax increases in either the Dem Senate or Repub House debt ceiling plans.

What???

Am I the last one at the party?  When did eliminating the tax breaks come off the table?  And wasn't that the main distinction between the Democratic and Republican plans in the first place?  I realize the Dems will probably take less of a hatchet to the entitlement programs, but that's not the one big difference we've been fighting about this whole time.

I, for one, think the wealthiest people in America should pay higher taxes.  Why'd we give up that fight?  Please, someone who is wiser than I, enlighten me as to why this isn't yet one more example of Democrats giving up prematurely.
